Creamy Lemon Garlic Seafood Salmon with Shrimp
The Creamy Lemon Garlic Seafood Salmon with Shrimp is the kind of dinner that feels elegant enough for a special occasion but is simple enough for a weeknight. Tender salmon fillets and juicy shrimp are cooked in a silky garlic cream sauce brightened with fresh lemon. The combination of rich salmon, sweet shrimp, buttery sauce and citrus creates a beautifully balanced dish that is comforting without feeling too heavy.
The secret is to avoid overcooking the seafood. Salmon needs only enough heat to become tender and flaky, while shrimp cook in just a few minutes. Preparing them separately before bringing everything together in the sauce gives you much better control over the final texture.
Ingredients for 4 servings
- 4 salmon fillets, about 150–180 g each
- 300 g peeled and deveined shrimp
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 4 garlic cloves, finely minced
- 1 small shallot, finely chopped
- 180 ml heavy cream
- 120 ml seafood or chicken broth
- 1 lemon
- 60 g freshly grated Parmesan
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped
- Salt and black pepper
- A pinch of red pepper flakes, optional
Prepare the salmon and shrimp
Pat the salmon fillets and shrimp dry with paper towels. This helps them brown properly instead of steaming in the pan. Season the salmon with salt, black pepper and paprika.
Season the shrimp lightly with salt, pepper and a small pinch of Italian seasoning. Keep the seasoning relatively simple because the creamy garlic sauce will provide plenty of flavor.
Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Place the salmon skin-side down if the fillets have skin. Cook for approximately 4 to 5 minutes, then carefully turn and cook for another 2 to 3 minutes, depending on thickness.
The salmon does not need to be completely finished at this stage. Remove it from the skillet and set it aside.
Add the shrimp to the same pan. Cook for approximately 1 to 2 minutes per side, until pink and opaque. Remove them as soon as they are cooked. Overcooked shrimp can quickly become firm and rubbery.
Make the creamy lemon garlic sauce
Reduce the heat to medium and add the butter to the skillet. Add the chopped shallot and cook for about 2 minutes until softened.
Add the minced garlic and cook for approximately 30 seconds. You want the garlic fragrant but not browned, as burnt garlic can give the sauce a bitter taste.
Pour in the broth and scrape the bottom of the pan with a wooden spoon. Those browned bits left behind by the salmon and shrimp are packed with flavor and will become part of the sauce.
Simmer for about 2 to 3 minutes, then add the heavy cream. Stir gently and allow the sauce to simmer for another few minutes until it begins to thicken.
Add lemon and Parmesan
Lower the heat and stir in the freshly grated Parmesan. Mix until the cheese melts into the cream and creates a smooth, velvety sauce.
Add the zest of half the lemon and approximately one tablespoon of fresh lemon juice. Taste the sauce and add more lemon if desired. The citrus should brighten the cream without making the sauce sharply acidic.
Add the red pepper flakes if you enjoy a little heat. Finish with freshly ground black pepper and chopped parsley.
If the sauce becomes too thick, add a splash of broth. If it seems too thin, allow it to simmer gently for another minute or two.
Bring everything together
Return the salmon fillets to the skillet, spooning some of the sauce over the top. Arrange the shrimp around the salmon.
Cover loosely and cook over low heat for approximately 2 to 3 minutes, just until the salmon is fully warmed through and the flavors come together.
Avoid vigorously boiling the sauce at this point. Gentle heat keeps the cream smooth and prevents the seafood from becoming overcooked.
Finish with another sprinkle of parsley, fresh lemon zest and a few thin lemon slices if desired.
What to serve with creamy salmon and shrimp
This creamy lemon garlic salmon pairs beautifully with rice because the grains soak up the rich sauce. Pasta, mashed potatoes or roasted potatoes are equally delicious.
For something lighter, serve it with steamed broccoli, asparagus, green beans or a crisp green salad. A piece of crusty bread is also highly recommended because leaving that lemon-garlic cream sauce behind would be a shame.
Tips for the best seafood salmon
Use salmon fillets that are similar in thickness so they cook evenly. Fresh lemon is also preferable to bottled lemon juice because the zest adds an important layer of citrus aroma.
Do not overcrowd the pan when cooking the shrimp. If necessary, cook them in two batches. Most importantly, remember that seafood continues cooking from residual heat, so it is better to remove it from the pan slightly early than to leave it cooking too long.
For an extra-rich sauce, add a small knob of butter just before serving. For more vegetables, spinach, cherry tomatoes, mushrooms or asparagus can be added to the skillet.
The finished Creamy Lemon Garlic Seafood Salmon with Shrimp brings together everything you want in a comforting seafood dinner: flaky salmon, succulent shrimp, fragrant garlic, creamy Parmesan and bright lemon. It is easy enough for a weeknight yet impressive enough to serve when you have guests, making it a recipe worth keeping close at hand.
